About This Spot

From the moment you arrive at El Merendero, nestled along the busy stretch of S Garey Ave in Pomona, you’ll sense a vibrant local hub where the rhythms of the neighborhood come alive. The exterior hints at a no-frills, everyday spot cherished by regulars, but step inside and you find a comfortably casual space humming with the energy of family gatherings, early morning breakfasts, and lunchtime conversations.

The atmosphere moves at a friendly, unhurried pace, where the clatter of plates and the murmur of familiar voices create a warm, welcoming backdrop. Whether you're seated near a small television or at a communal table, there’s a feeling that you’re part of a larger community—one that values good food made with heart and a shared connection to Mexican culinary traditions.

El Merendero’s menu unfolds like a beloved family recipe book come to life. The kitchen sends out comforting plates that mix familiar and vibrant flavors: hearty stews like menudo and pozole that bring a slow-cooked depth, alongside the crisp, lively satisfaction of chilaquiles or al pastor tacos. Breakfast here is more than a meal—it’s an invitation to slow down with hot cakes, fluffy eggs, and the gentle heat of chorizo or carne asada, reflecting the calming start to a day in a place where everyone seems to know your name.

Adjacent to the restaurant, a panadería extends the warmth with an array of freshly baked Mexican bread and tamales, an unexpected delight that draws in early risers and the curious alike. The savory aromas wafting from the bakery blend seamlessly with the savory sizzle inside, creating an experience both familiar and quietly special.

Regulars appreciate this spot not just for its food but for its honest, down-to-earth environment. It’s the kind of place where the waitstaff’s attentiveness feels personal, where tortilla chips arrive unprompted while you settle in, and where each visit feels like stepping into a well-loved local tradition. For anyone curious about Pomona’s everyday flavors and unpolished charm, El Merendero offers a genuine taste of community and comfort.

Food came quick. It was hot and overall tasty. The sauce in my green chilaquiles was spicy but a bit tangy for my taste. Dish was overall pretty good and I enjoyed this dish. Chile Verde plate was good too. Overall a pleasant experience We will be back

The Bakery next to El Merendero: This bakery is truly a gem! They offer a great variety of authentic Mexican favorites — fresh Mexican bread, delicious tamales (beef, chicken, cheese with jalapeños, elote, and pork), champurrado, coffee, chicharrones, corn and harina tortillas, Mexican jello, and so many other tasty treats. I always come here for my tamales and Mexican bread because they’re consistently delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. The prices are very affordable, and the quality is excellent every single time. If you’re looking for a great spot to pick up tamales or pan dulce, you can’t go wrong here. Highly recommend giving this bakery a try — you’ll love it just as much as I do!

My wife and I have never been here and wanted somewhere near our tax guy. I chose this place and was pleasantly surprised. Parking was somewhat hard to find but 2 hours are free! Outside looks kind of rough but inside looks cozy and like a busy cafeteria. Once seated the service is excellent. I had pancakes and eggs, my lady had Menudo which was so tasty. Pancakes were so good and so were the potatoes. So much flavor. We highly recommend and there is a bakery right next door. They also serve beer!

The atmosphere is relaxed. There's a couple of TVs on so if you're dining by yourself like I was when I went, you can watch it while you wait for your food. The server was prompt, friendly, and very polite. She brought me some tortilla chips to snack on while I waited for my food. I had the chorizo with eggs, rice and beans. It was delicious. The portion will fill you up. Merenderos prices are pretty good. There's also a bakery attached so you can pick up some baked goods to take home.

The busiest place you’ll find in Pomona. Seriously. This is an establishment really. The food is good too because people flock here and it’s busier than downtown. Pomona will be dead and this place will have more customers than the entire downtown Pomona. There is even a Mexican bakery (panaderia) connected to the other side of the restaurant. It’s a pleasant surprise to have the two businesses connected. I went for the bakery and then I saw the restaurant. Considering Pomona is not very interesting, this restaurant and bakery are busy and feel they belong here.

Their food is varied and soooo tasteful!!! They have friendly and efficient service. It's a nice place to go for a first casual date, a great place to eat with your family or with friends. The food has an authentic taste and doesn't taste like it's coming out of a can. They are VERY reasonably priced and they have decent portions of food. They have a chill and comfortable atmosphere. It's one of my favorite Mexican restaurants to visit!!

Very reasonable priced. They have a bakery attached to the restaurant. Their Carne Asada is very tender.
